Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced that an official internet strategy is set off for mid-year to promote economic development when addressing in the opening ceremony of CeBIT, the world's foremost tradeshow for the digital industry on Mar.1, Xinhuanet reported.

In her address, the chancellor stressed the opportunities for information technologies and promised to create the necessary conditions with the construction of broadband access.

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, whose country is CeBIT's "partner country" this year, highlighted the importance of modern technologies oriented economy and called for a "single digital market" covering the whole European Union (EU) to remove the technical barriers between and among EU states.

The theme this year is "Connected World". More than 4,000 companies from 68 countries are expected to take part in the expo exhibiting their products or network solutions.
