Someone hit my car while it was parked and the driver was someone on a learners permit. Medium sized dent, some scratches, and a scratched rim. They want to avoid insurance and agreed to pay for the damages themselves after I send them quotes from shops.
Is this a good idea? First time something like this has happened. Relative who has dealt with insurance before says to contact my insurance and file an incident report but not a claim in case they back out of the deal.

I would go through insurance. They can always back out or ghost you. That way if you go through insurance it’s all documented.Just file through their insurance as long as you have their info
You can certainly have the other party pay for your loss, it is up to you. I’d certainly obtain their valid insurance information _first_. What happens a lot is an estimate is submitted, the other person does not like the amount and then the only way to get out of it is to ghost the person.
