Here’s what happened:
— About a year ago, my dad logged on to Nelnet and it said “paid in full” on our Parent Plus loans
— I joined this Reddit and some folks here said that that could also mean it got transferred to another service provider but I honestly never looked further into it at that time because no one was hounding us for money and I didn’t really have money to put towards it. I didn’t wanna kick a sleeping dog.
— On Monday this week my dad was watching the news and they said that student loan services are cracking down, so he logged onto Nelnet again and it still said “paid in full”.
— I decided to call them yesterday and ask, and the lady confirmed it was paid. I asked her if it had been transferred somewhere and she said no, that she’d be able to see that if that were the case. I then asked her if she could tell if it was part of some sort of forgiveness and she said she wasn’t sure, it just says “paid in full”.
😳😳😳😳😳
The only thing I can think of is that my dad was (and is) on disability, and I think at one point he might have filled out some sort of loan forgiveness form for people who are on disability? (He has MS, so his memory is not great and he gets confused, so when I asked him about this yesterday he was not sure, but I remember him telling me about this a few years ago.)
I’m scared that someone’s gonna call me in like a year and be like “this was an admin error, sorry”. Does this seem real? What do you think?
Was mysteriously forgiven of $50k

When you contact them next, ask for a zero-balance confirmation document or a paid-in-full document to be mailed to you. That will at least give you a leg to stand on in the event that the worst happens and you need to dispute it. Otherwise, just count yourself lucky and put cash off to the side as if the loan may reappear. And if it doesn’t, enjoy your nest egg.
