My loans with Mohela were supposed to be in forbearance but they stopped the forbearance and put me on a standard plan and reported my all my loans as late, which destroyed my credit score.

After many attempts and hours and hours of waiting on hold I was finally able to escalate and speak with a supervisor and sort this out. After looking into my accounts they agreed that it should have been on forbearance and he said he’s submitted a request to update my accounts with the credit bureaus and he sees no issues with getting these late payments removed. He said it might take 30-60 days for the changes to show up on my credit reports. It hasn’t been 60 days yet since that phone call but I’m worried since I haven’t received anything in writing about this “request” or about this matter at all from MOHELA. So I don’t have any evidence of that phone call and that request that was submitted.

Has anyone been in a similar situation where their credit reports got corrected ? How long did it take? Did you receive anything in writing?

Mohela reported my accounts as late when I was supposed to be in forbearance and ruined my score, I was finally able to speak to a supervisor and they agreed it was a mistake and told me they submitted a request to update my accounts with the bureaus, but haven’t received anything in writing?

    1. You can’t trust MOHELA to do anything they say. Just read all of the posts about it. You don’t want to keep waiting while trusting them, since they probably did nothing anyway.

What you need to do today is:

      1. Dispute the credit reporting issue with all of the credit bureaus. Include receipts, such as screenshots, showing that the loan is in a forbearance with no payment due. MOHELA will likely respond to the dispute.
      2. Report MOHEAL’s actions to the student loan ombudsman.
      1. This won’t really do anything, since they don’t have the budget or staff, but it’ll put another complaint on their record.
      3. Send a message through the secure portal on MOHELA’s website documenting your previous conversation, reminding them of the steps they agreed to take, and that you expect to see it reflected on your credit report by whatever the 60 day mark would be.
      1. Like 2, this won’t do much. You’ll be lucky if you get anything back other than canned response to call them for more details. However, it provides additional documentation on the record if they don’t resolve it.
      4. If your state has an office that oversees student loan servicers, contact that office with a complain about the behavior.
      1. Folks in places like California, which provides oversight through the Department of Financial Protection & Innovation, have had good luck getting MOHELA to respond to issues this way.
      5. Wait patiently for up to 60 days for your Credit Report to update.

If it isn’t fixed within 60 days, find a lawyer for a free consultation. See if you can sue MOHELA. All of the extra steps above documenting everything will help you with this conversation.

      Good luck!
