My son took my car and crashed it, no one was hurt thank goodness. He was charged with taking a car without permission. I have comprehensive and collision coverage but this is now going to investigation. Should I be covered? I thought comprehensive coverage included damages from theft. (I am in Ontario). Thanks for any advice.

Most in here are in the US. Might try a Canadian sub.
Unless your son lives with you, it should be covered by one of those coverages. Only thing you can do is report the claim and let the insurance review it. It may not be considered a theft under the policy because presumably your son had access to the keys and just took them, so it may just be a collision loss.
If he lives with you, comprehensive coverage probably can’t even apply under the policy because it probably excludes ‘theft’ by a household resident.

Unless you file a theft claim, no. Even then, it’s most likely a no.
Looks like the son gona have to find a summer job for a few years to pay you back
A lot of Americans commenting.
I work in Canada where I believe this is a bit different and can speak to this.
First, glad to hear everyone is safe and unhurt.
A couple things – for this to be a real theft, you will need to report your son to the police. This is a criminal act (it is), so your insurer will require this.
In Ontario, the policy includes a stat condition which says any driver must be authorized to drive. Your son not having a license, would not be authorized. So he will need to deal with some legal consequences. Depending how old he is, this could anywhere from prison time to a solid finger wagging with a warning from a Judge. Usually moreso towards leniency if this is a first offense for a younger person.
Second thing – coverages. The base policy excludes theft by a member of your household. This gets added back in and covered under All Perils coverage. So you will need to validate that you have that. Generally, if you have Collision and Comprehensive you will, but best to double check as they are technically different.
These are never easy situations to deal with, so all the best.
This would be collision. License status doesn’t matter. Good luck. Don’t kill the kid.
Theft by a member living in the household will not be covered by comprehensive.
It is specifically covered only by “All Perils” coverage in Ontario.
