A 2018 report by the International Institute for Sustainable Development found that 40 million people work in artisanal and small-scale mining, and of these, between 30 to 50-percent are women. While many women work in artisanal and small-scale mining, the opposite is true in large scale mining where very few women can afford to participate.

VOA’s Ndimyake Mwakalyelye spoke to Anja Benshaul-Tolonen, a professor at Barnard College at Columbia University in New York about her analysis on the impact of large scale mining, women, and domestic violence. She also discusses why she believes large scale mining in Africa is a “mixed blessing” for women and how it affects women’s job prospects compared to their male counterparts.
