Tabletop RPGs (D&D, Daggerheart, Magical Kitties Save the Day[great for families with younger kids!], Pathfinder) are an extremely cost effective hobby. You can entertain an entire family or an entire friend group for a 4-6 hour event with things I promise you already have around your house.
If you have a computer or smartphone you are reading this on, you can find dice rolling apps for free.
The basic rules of D&D are also available for free from the publisher, as are those for MANY other games, which will have a free quick start adventure or a free copy of the rules called a "System Reference Document". ALL of Pathfinder is freely available through their online Archive.
I've named some of my favorites, but there are plenty to suit any genre and personal taste.
Character sheets and note taking can be done for free on various "virtual table top" sites, or on a notebook and pencil, easily gotten for $1-$2.
Need a way to entertain a crowd for nearly free? Want a hobby that can last a lifetime for at most, the cost of a book?
Try sitting down with your friends and playing an RPG. It's one of the cheapest ways to entertain a group with a structured activity I've found yet.
TTRPGs – A Frugal hobby I don't see discussed enough!

Playing D&D once a week is such a good way to fill time and socialise. Thankfully I can host, so getting five people round and telling them that they have to bring the snacks is free fun!
You’re local library most likely has physical copies of the rulebooks and guides as well! You can also get maps online and print them for very cheap.
