Hi,
My dream is to run a business . I have never done so, and have several times come close but ultimately didn’t start due to it not being a viable idea. Unfortunately I have always worked in the hospitality area and worked for some sees Resturant / club. How do you find a hole in the market and start your own business ?
I really want to own a business , just have never been able to start anything .

Find an existing problem and then create a solution.
Totally get that feeling. Sometimes just starting small with one idea can make the rest fall into place.
allow me to help you to make what you said more precise.
1. what you want is NOT **to own a business**.
2. your dream is NOT **to run a business**.
3. what you want IS **to own a** ***specific kind*** **of business.**
4. your dream IS **to run a** ***specific kind*** **of business.**
Otherwise, if the first two were to be true, you wouldn’t be here, and you would already be running and doing a business.
Look for opportunities right where you work. What job that the restaurant hires out could you do better? Start something small and in an area you’re familiar with.
No need to re-invent the wheel. I see so many people investing tons of money, sometimes out of pocket, into SaaS startups when they haven’t any supporting market research.
There’s no shame in sticking to proven businesses with growing demand. Lawn care, window cleaning, pooper-scooper, stuff like that.
(And no that last one wasn’t a joke, it’s an undeserved market with great margins if it’s well managed)
First, you should figure out where your ideal customers are online, especially in the industry you know best. Early on, it’s a great idea to find them on content sites or forums. Just observe what they’re discussing and what their biggest pain points are. Then, you can try to gather that data and have an AI analyze it. You could even tell the AI to organize its findings into a markdown table with columns for the pain point, the original text, some business ideas, and the competitive landscape.
Find some junk you want to sell, put it on Facebook marketplace. Sell it. You’re a business owner. Now keep working.
find something that annoys you and fix it.
i didn’t like how lemonades were always so sweet and the flavored ones were just syrups mixed in, so i made my own. used fresh fruit purees for my flavored lemonades and didn’t make it overly sweet. started making it at house parties and everyone told me i should start selling it.
so started selling at farmers markets. the lemonades became a hit. had long lines and always sold out. of course kids didn’t like it much b/c it wasn’t candy, but the parents loved it. expanded to brick-and-mortar, then covid hit. couldn’t keep it alive due to selling restrictions and overhead. ended up selling my business and recipes to a local coffee shop.
it’s a lot of work! but very gratifying.
Learn a trade, manage that trade, start a business in that trade. Will take about three years of mastery. Most Millennials and GenZ don’t have the intestinal fortitude for it. The world is yours if you will just give it three years.
Your dream is to escape discipline.
It was all of ours.
Get a job and see if you desire “more” after you excel at it.
You’ll be thankful not learning the hard way.
I’m still learning 20+ years later.
Start and fail!!
If you’ve been on the brink of starting one but never did, go and buy a business. There’s tons of videos and newsletters about acquisitions and buying businesses (from boomers, retired people, inheritance clearance etc). Get a loan and buy one. Then run it.
Find something that’s working, clone it and improve
