I am a first-generation college student with immigrant parents who do not know about student loans and forgiveness programs. I have been trying to figure out what the best solution is, but I have no idea where to start.

I currently have loans in both my name and in my mom’s name, and we need both to be the payments as low as possible. Something happened with the student loan office when I had placed it under forbearance, and they are not taking responsibility for it. I am not sure what happened, but my forbearance had ended before the allotted time frame and we became delinquent by one payment. I was able to place the loan on forbearance again, but it impacted my mom's credit. I have about 20,000 in my name, with my mom's balance (my loans and my sisters loans) totaling to 100,000.

I have been wanting to consolidate my portion of the loans she took out for me, and my own, together. I didn’t know if this was something that could be possible. I also have been nervous about doing consolidation, as I didn’t want to risk losing the benefits of forgiveness programs if I took this route. I was also looking into websites like Yrefy.com, but I don’t know if this is reliable or could get me into more issues than I should. I don’t necessarily want to pay it off as soon as possible (but also not feel like i’ll be in debt for the rest of my life), I would like to be able to just lower my payments enough so that we won’t be feeling like we are drowning in bills. I was also thinking about doing the income-driven repayment plan for the loans in my name, but is this permanent? If I fill out the application, could I switch later?

If anyone has any experience with this, please let me know. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

My forbearance is coming to an end, and I have no idea what to do

    1. It’s not possible to change the borrower on federal student loans.

Keep federal student loans as federal for the borrower protections.
