Does anyone have a stand mixer they love that’s not $400+? I have been looking at thrift shops and estate sales for a long, long time and haven’t gotten lucky yet. I’d love something I can get on Amazon. I see a lot of alternative brands, but don’t know what reviews to trust. Primarily looking to make my own bread, so a dough hook would be the priority. If you’ve had one for a while, bonus points! Thank you.

I have an older sunbeam that I absolutely love.
I know they are expensive, so if it’s a matter of now having the $$ now to get one that’s completely understandable. However I will tell you that the Kitchenaid is worth the money. I have had mine for 20 years, use it regularly for breads, cakes, etc. and it’s great—never had an issue. My sister has had hers for 30 years, uses it regularly and it’s great. It’s a high investment up front but it’s a worthwhile spend because it lasts even with regular use.
I saw someone post that Target may have some models on sale now and TJMaxx often has them at a discount around the Holidays. There are different models as well…the 4.5qt is cheaper b it still quality and can still easily make doughs, etc.
You can get refurbished one for $220 from Kitchenaid
Very old sunbeam are good but the new ones I won’t touch. If you are looking for these, they come up on ebay from time to time. I have one in my basement that was used till I got a used kitchenaid for 45 bucks.
I stalked the Goodwill auction site till I found a good price on a vintage Kitchenaid. It was a pretty tense last few minutes, but I won it for $56! Even with a hefty shipping rate, it was a steal, and I use it on the regular, so I’ve definitely gotten my money’s worth.
I’d suggest checking there, and read the descriptions. Some are labeled as parts only or display models, but there’s also some good options.
My KitchenAid has been going strong since 1977. I’d never buy anything else.
If you’re just making bread, maybe a bread machine would be a good option? You can mix and bake all in one appliance.
I do like my machine, but for frugality, you can definitely get a bread machine and just use it for the mixing/development but take it out to proof and bake. I’d get a hand mixer for any “sometimes” project (cookies, whipped cream, etc). I still use mine for small projects often. Bread machines are pretty common at thrift stores and decent hand mixers go on sale, if you wanna watch the prices.
Have you tried Facebook marketplace? I see tons of folks trying to unload their basically unused mixers there.
