Elon is on a new episode of All In talking the purchase of spectrum this week. Just dropped a few mins ago. He admits a “2 year timeframe” to modify the phones to be able to use the frequencies.
He’s saying phones with specific chipsets will be needed. He also said they still need to BUILD THE SATELLITES. Eventually is said a lot. “We’re working with the handset makers to add these frequencies to the phones…you will be able to watch videos on your phone (crowd ooos and ahhhs here) …. We’re not going to put the other carriers out of business, they own a lot of spectrum….”

Yeah exactly—ASTS doesn’t need consumers waiting on chipset upgrades, that’s a huge edge versus SpaceX’s longer runway. Market’s dumping it like the tech’s dead, but in reality they’re still ahead in the practical rollout game. Classic case of sentiment over fundamentals right now.
Adding band support on modem chips is not terribly difficult. This is not a major hurdle to overcome, but whether OEMs like Apple will go along is another thing altogether.
How many satellites can ASTS launch in 2 years though? I remember they promised to launch 25 in 2025 around February. But now it’s still fucking 0.
