I have my license in NY.
When I told my brokerage I wanted to leave, they immediately removed my access to everything(work email, listings, clients). However, when I asked about the formal termination, they didn’t give me a clear answer for weeks and termination was not outlined in any handbook or contracts we had either. Now they say I’m not officially terminated until I sign their paperwork which includes terms that were never disclosed during onboarding. I’m not comfortable signing any of them right now, but I want my license released asap since they have already stalled it for over a month.
Can they just refuse to release my license by claiming I'm not "terminated"?
A colleague suggested I file a complaint with the DOS and have them step in to release my license. But I feel like this could create unnecessary escalations. Does anyone have experience with this in New York?
NY Brokerage won't release my license and I'm stuck with them

Contact the Real Estate Board of your state. CALL Them and tell them the issue and ask what they can do or what you should do. This could be a violation on the brokers part.
As a side note. You need to look over your Contract very carefully. In there should be something about termination and how it is done. If what they are asking you to sign to is different from that Don’t Sign it.
Would need more info to know if it is a bad thing or not.
What does it say in your Independent Contractor agreement about termination?
