I went to the food bank because I could not afford food on my limited budget and while I’m grateful for the food, the produce were already spoilt or close to getting spoilt quick. Is there any trick/advice to store or cook the expired bread and spoilt produce so that I won’t fall sick when I’m eating it?

If there are any recommendations for food banks in NYC that have good produce and fruit, please drop a comment.

    1. Bread goes into their freezer. Fruit can be cooked and turned into spreads and syrups. Veggies can be blanched and flash frozen. You can also cook them and freeze the end product.

    2. Bread can go into the freezer and you can pop it directly into the toaster from the freezer. If you have freezer space, you can cut most fruit, lay it on a baking sheet or even several plates in a single layer and freeze it. Once frozen, you can store in a bag or other container. Personally, I would cook the veg and then freeze the cooked product.

I’ve been in your position before, and unfortunately, sometimes getting food from a food bank isn’t always “free” because of the time involved. Good luck and I hope things look up for you soon.

Throw all the veggies that are manky looking into a pot and make soup. Make it thick and freeze it and then yiy can water it down and add rice/beans/meat when you eat it. As long as you have a solid base of “normal” stuff like cabbage, potatoes, carrots, parsnips, turnips, onions, celery, rutabagas, etc, you can get away with adding some less common soup ingredients like kale, spinach, lettuce (not too much, but a bit won’t hurt), apples, pears, lemons, peppers, radishes, etc.
