      EROI (energy return on investment) of biofuels is less than 1. That is, 1 kg of bio-ethanol uses more than 1 kg of fossil oil to produce (e.g. fertilize and tend to, using farming equipment) and transport. What works as an anti-knocking agent or aviation fuel does not work as a fundamental replacement.
