I was born and raised in Venice. Then I moved abroad for work and shifted my residency to Ireland. Now my own city rolled out this “entry fee/day pass” for non-residents on certain days. Guess what: my parents don’t pay, my friends with residency don’t pay, but I do. To visit them. To have a coffee in my old campo. To walk home.

It’s surreal. I have to book online, get a QR, and be ready for checks like I’m entering a theme park instead of the place where I learned to walk. If I forget or show up on the wrong day, I’m a “visitor” and I get fined. I pay flights, trains, restaurants, everything, and still I’m treated like a tourist in the city on my birth certificate.

I get the reasons they give, crowd control, money for services, whatever. But this is my hometown. Changing residency for work shouldn’t mean buying a ticket to see my family. Venice feels less like a city and more like a museum with turnstiles.

Anyone else in the same boat with these “day-pass” rules? Is there any legitimate exemption if you’re born there but live abroad, or is the message basically: either keep residency or pay to come home? This feels insane.

I have to pay a ticket to visit my hometown. I’m from Venice.

    1. why is this on economy?

pricing restricted (access to venice here) resources has worked in many other situations; you’re collateral damage

This is interesting. I mean, you’re not a resident. So although the city feels like “yours,” you don’t actually meet the standard definition.

A Lot of places are putting in tourism restrictions, which in practice means non residents. Usually it starts with a hotel tax, but that didn’t constrain demand sufficiently.

So, yeah, I guess you’re getting a day pass for your hometown.

Out of curiosity, how would you go about “maintaining residence”? Not own property, surely. But if all you need is mail sent to your parents house…

Seeing how this trial ended in July, I’m confused as to how you are still being charged in October? Is this Bot confused??
