In this video, I discuss why “losing your Bitcoin in a boating accident” is probably not the best tax avoidance strategy.

Bitcoin’s open ledger combines with KYC (“Know Your Customer”) requirements to create a truly nasty cocktail.

When you give your personal information to an exchange as part of KYC, and then withdraw your Bitcoin, both the exchange and the government can track your subsequent Bitcoin movement.

If you say that you’ve lost your private keys (“boating accident”), but then end up moving your Bitcoin, the government will know that you still control that Bitcoin.

Remember to always pay your taxes in full and follow all laws.

One solution is to purchase non-KYC Bitcoin, but this comes with its own pitfalls and may be illegal in your jurisdiction.
