I mean this sucks and it’s a bad trend, but in being fair for a lot of Americans, they barely have a choice, if any due to the how expensive the insurance costs are getting. For health insurance, our healthcare system in the US is the most expensive in the world but with the worst outcomes compared to almost any developed country (or even developing), the lowest life expectancy, terrible infant mortality, worst access, highest medical debt and highest medical bankruptcy. In fact we’re about the only country that *has* medical bankruptcies at all, due to high cost and stupidity of link healthcare to employment that’s obviously so shaky, and lack of universal healthcare like most other countries have.
I have a lot of old friends and college classmates working in tech who not only got laid off, their companies went under. So they have no health insurance at all, or it’s ridiculous expensive with Cobra or on the market. (this is why we’re telling all our own relatives at least those in the USA, never go into debt and make sure you have savings to last 1-2 years, America is the worst place in the world to be in debt). And now the dumb Republicans and Trump have literally caused a shutdown in the US government to try to force even more cuts to healthcare and make it and health insurance even more expensive for Americans. No wonder so many more are just saying f it, they can’t afford it either way and the United States will just slide down farther into a banana republic where it’s citizens can’t even afford basic medical care. This happens even to professionals here earning a lot of money.
And it’s same thing with homeowner’s insurance, here the housing bubble and these still stupid high home prices are the main culprit–homes in the US on average are now over 6 times income, more like 9-10 times income in a lot of markets and this when there’s more downwards the pressure on incomes from all the cost cutting and offshoring. So all these crazy expensive homes are that much more expensive for insurance to cover, and then you have worsening weather and climate change on the top of.
