Hello, I’m on my mother’s plan for car insurance and we are both registered as drivers of both cars. My mother has a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I had a 1998 Acura RL and now a 2003 Acura TL. We have American Connect through Costco. She has a premium while I have liability.
I totaled my car in August and just received the 6 month renewal statement. My insurance went from 300 to 577 while hers went from 400 to 1000 and some change. She cannot afford this in the slightest and I will probably be the one to end up covering it.
I called the insurance and they told me that they can’t remove me as a driver because I live in the same household. What are the workarounds to this? If I get removed from being a driver will her insurance go back down? I really need help right now.
Totaled my car and now my mom’s insurance is an extra $600.

Both of you should get a new insurance carrier because that’s total BS
Well if yall are on the same policy it should go up because of you not her. You were the driver at the time of loss. Overall your policy will go up. Best bet would be to shop around with a broker for different carriers you aren’t obligated to stay with one carrier. Only way your mom would also get dinged if her name was on the title of the totaled car- then that would explain such. Just shop around- and they are correct that you can’t just take yourself off u less you want your own policy- you’d have to list each other and exclude coverage for each other if you went that route but you’d also be loosing multi driver and vehicle discount.
Get a new insurance company and quote to exclude each other from the new policies.
You can sign an exclusion saying you will not drive her car
You are considering a high risk to them so of course the payments went up. It don’t matter the value of the car that you wrecked or the coverage you had on it. It matters that YOU totaled a vehicle so YOU are high risk. Of course you should be the one foot the bill for the increase since you are the reason behind it increase.
