Do executive bonuses improve results?

The C Suite salaries of a UK public limited company are published. Some of those salaries are high 6 figure to 8 figure salaries.
On top of that, some of these folk are also paid as non-exec directors. These are also non-trivial amounts.

Is there any evidence to support the premise that high bonuses are beneficial to the company?
