I feel like everything is going so fast and I haven’t had time to process or even think about anything. Any and all tips are helpful. Truly, TIA.

I got into a car accident yesterday morning. Three of us in my car and one in the other. My car became a total loss, a passenger in my vehicle was injured and received treatment in the hospital (discharged a few hours later), and I’m not sure what the other car looks like in terms of salvaging it (an older vehicle, about maybe 2014 while mine is a little newer at 2018). When I was with the police at the accident, I heard the radiator was leaking. Other driver claims to have insurance but I won’t know fully until I receive the police report at the end of next week or next. I did receive his information like name and address on my claim though.

I got my car towed out and it’s now in my insurance’s salvage yard. My insurance looks like it’s a full coverage insurance (according to my parents) but honestly I’m not even 100% what that means because I bought it when I got my first new car and it was because it’s what mom and dad recommended I get. Well, anyway, I put in the claim on my insurance app almost immediately and was assigned an agent rather quickly who assessed and sent me the estimates. I also checked my KBB against it too. So it is as follows:

They consider my car a total loss, estimating the repair to be $13,900 over a total of 3 days. They want to settle my car for $16,900. KBB states car is worth $12.5k to $14k.

This is honestly all really confusing, it’s not sitting in my head. I don’t even know where the money is coming from and what’ll happen with the other person. I don’t have the most stable job at the moment due to health reasons so it’s adding to my increasing anxiety. Can anyone please explain this to me like I’m 5 and what you recommend me doing next? For context, I live in the state of HI. Thank you so much in advance, it’s really appreciated.

I’m honestly really confused on what to do and what it all means. Can someone please kindly help me?

    1. I wouldn’t worry about the other person at all. You turned in the claim, let your insurance handle whatever needs to be handled.

Otherwise, they are offering you 16.9K for the vehicle. That sounds like a good offer based on the numbers you posted. So they would contact whoever you make payments to( if you do) and whatever you owe will come out of the 16.9K. Anything leftover will go to you.

That’s really about it for the basic stuff.

    2. Ok, what happened in the accident? Who was at fault?

HI is a ‘no fault’ state so your passenger(s) and you, if injured, will have PIP claims through your auto insurance to pay initial medical bills.

Since you seem to say that you have collision coverage, your insurance can handle payment for your vehicle.
