I was rear ended today on the freeway. I told the guy to get off at the next exit so we could exchange info but he drove off.
I wrote down his plates & called to file a claim.
i’m wondering if i’m going to be expected to pay for my regular $500 collision deductible or if something like this would be considered as a uninsured/underinsured which has a $250 deductible?

What state are you in?
Did you file a police report?
Depends on state. In some states you can file umpd for hit and run but in most you cannot.
This is leaving the scene of an accident, you should file a police report. They will investigate it and should give you a report that shows if they had insurance, the company, policy etc. If they don’t have insurance, then it’s an uninsured motorist situation. If you have collision, just put in a claim with your insurance, let them handle it.
I had similar happen, a big dummy in a pickup pulling a flat bead trailer making a 90 degree left in a Walmart parking lot hit the corner of my vehicle while I was at a stop sign. He got out, took a look at the damage, walked back to his truck to get his info and while I was looking for mine in my vehicle, he drove off. It only took me about a minute, but he was gone and I didn’t even hear him going, he was out of sight already.
I called 911 in a few minutes two cop cars responded, but he got away. The dummy did this right in front of Walmart, so the cops went in and got his plate from the video. I figured he must not have insurance and he was from out of state. Cops charged him with leaving the scene plus other charges. Turns out he had insurance. I filed with his carrier, they paid easily, no argument. He had to get a lawyer, plead out to reduced charge, fined several hundred dollars, all for nothing.
If the police or your carrier can’t identify the driver from the plates, then this would be a UM-PD claim in Texas. If they can ID the driver/owner, but there’s no insurance, thn it’s also UM-PD. If they ID the driver/owner and they find a policy, then you’d have to file under collision (but the other policy should respond instead of yours directly or through subrogation).
Your should file a police report ASAP. Might not do any good, but do it anyway.
