I have a 2018 Audi Q5 prestige. Couple of months back when I was teaching driving to my family member . Accidentally she lost control and the car fell into a small ditch and there were lot of stones and car would not reverse and could not take out from there . Lot of neighbors came in to help kept applying accelerator it would go couple of inches up and down but, just could not get it out. Then a towing company was called to help out remove it.

I thought might be just the undercover seals hit damaged and I did zip tire it at a shop the same day. Then kept driving that car went for couple of likh drives to Bakersfield and also to Yosemite from Sacramento and it was fine. I just notice sand felt some small irritating flunky clinking sounds at low speeds but at high speed in the highways it was fine.

Just decided to get it checked at a body shop later . They told about a subframe damage, something related to suspension, exhaust, etc. then when I filled claim with my insurance and once supplemental estimate was done repairs cost came to 12k and this is where my insurance decided to consider this as a Total Loss.
And now are offering me 21 k with taxes . If I choose to keep this they said they will be giving out somewhere around 10k as payment for the repairs and even in this case the title would be considered as Salvage.

What you guys think I should do now . I am really confused. My Q5 prestige was so good and it had come with the heads up display and even had the driver assistance package which was much useful in highways with the Adaptive Cruise control ?

I am unable to trust their estimate and stuff because even after this except those small sounds at low speeds the car had not had any other issues .

And for such a low impact thing like this how can it result in damages worth 12k it sounds relay crazy to me !

I would have kept this car with 10.5 k insurance would give me and do minimal neeed repairs. But, I just got a new 2026 Tesla Model Y couple of months back. Love the FSD … So the question is how much I will miss my Audi Q5 prestige. Things I liked the most were the heads up display on the windshield the prestige trim gives you and the adaptive cruise control on the highways. I still like them but, I have been always using my Tesla Model Y and this has become a secondary car.

Ok if I decide to keep it I would loose on 10 k and, even if I try to get a used 2nd hand car as a backup I would not find anything close to the features I had on this even with say a Toyota Camry, Honda civic, etc and these will also cost me more. And these cars have gone up since Covid and the older model cars have depreciated much less and have retained their value. If for that 10k if my Audi comes to 200k miles without much fuss and hassle free without huge repair bills I would take it.

The body shop owner told me that . He said subframe is barely scratched and he won’t worry about that. Besides the engine mounts , arm bushings are all just slightly scratched and, even if I continue driving it this way it should not matter much he said. And not necessary to replace underbody seals either. Zip tire works !

Thing is when you file claim with insurance they take liability seriously and everything that is scratched slightly or not 100% they wanna replace. They decided this will be totaled as cost of repairs exceed the value of the car

But the million $ question is will it be really reliable and last for say till 200k miles without draining my $$$

What should I do take 21k and give the car or Accept 11k and keep the car ?

Progressive deemed my 2018 Q5 prestige total loss for a minor undercarriage damage.

    1. If you want to accept $11k and spend another $10k or more on repairs so it will pass California Salvage inspection go ahead.

Or do you want $21k and find another one that is not been damaged.

First off…if the car is totaled, why are they charging you $10,000 for it. The cost to keep the car should be the salvage-value.

I have dealt with Progressive 3 times and EVERYTIME they have tried to screw me.

They once offered me $450 for a totaled car. I wound up getting over $5,000 for it and got to keep the car.

The fact they are charging you $10k to keep a “totaled” car is suspicious.

Take the $21k and offer them $1k for the “totaled” car.

Better yet, get your insurance commissioner involved.

    3. Subframe is not minor undercarriage damage. The frame is what holds the car together. Get a second opinion.
