When I was a startup, I relied heavily on things like YouTube videos and the things that the most popular influencers had to say. For me, those were the things filling the vaccuum in my mind when it came to how to succeed in business.

Those things helped sometimes, and other times they got me spending countless hours on things that didn't work. That said, those countless hours taught me valuable lessons (so they weren't necessarily a complete waste).

But what I came to learn years down the line is that a ton of these influencers are just repeating things that they've heard or read about from older books.

In fact, the more I read books that were published back in the 80's and before then, the more I find that I understand business and marketing concepts better than the latest "guru" on YT.

That isn't to say that you can't find value on social media. It's just to point out that the original source of the information could be of much greater value to you.

It's the difference between getting investment advice from Warren Buffet, and getting investment advice from Warren's friend's nephew on YouTube. Some things get lost in translation.

Curious to hear if anybody else has found this to be a game-changer in business, and what books you're reading that have made an impact.

I’m in the same boat as you. I stopped chasing every new “hack” I found online when I realized much of it was old wisdom repackaged with better editing. The classics, especially, hit a bit harder because they have stood the test of time.
