So, I mainly shop Walmart for the same cheap food buys – Walmart brand eggs, cheese, bread, English muffins, dairy, produce, saltines, butter, etc. Last week I went and noticed nearly all my cheap thrills are 25 to 50% higher. I also buy the ground beef or pork in the square 1 lb package. They were all near 100% higher than usual–double the price. The ground beef was $8 a pound!
I never buy clothes there but I accompanied my sister to try to find a hoody or sweater, cheap, as she was visiting from out of town and we had a cold snap. I was shocked as they had nothing under $20. Most $25 to $35! Normally you could get a sweatshirt or a sweater for under $15. They're cheap and you don't expect them to last, made from synthetic fabrics so they don't wash well. They pill up and feel scratchy in short time.
I also noticed that some of the clothing had the pricing part of the tag torn off. No prices!!! And, The clearance rack items were only a couple dollars off when their clearance is usually 70% off.
Brand name shampoo/conditioner I purchased that were around $6 are now over $10.
I had purchased an orbital sander a year ago for $15 so just out of curiosity I went to check and the same item was $63!
I think I will be shopping the supermarkets and buying more brand name since it's only one or two bucks more than these generic Walmart products.
Is Walmart price gouging due to the tariff issues or coming recession? What the heck!?
Walmart's pricing is suddenly outrageous!!!

I think this is tariffs at work. We are stuck for at least the next 3 years with this nonsense
Try Costco, Walmart is a destructive entity that harms communities and destroys small businesses.
Thats what a 50% tariff on Brazilian beef will do
They had made an announcement a month or so ago that said they would have to raise prices because of tariffs. I imagine that is what you are seeing. I still find them cheaper than our local Kroger affiliate.
Price gouging, tariffs *plus* recession leading into an eventual depression
Remember when everyone said “Tarrifs are a tax you’ll pay on the products you buy”… well, here you go.
Luckily though, Elon will be a trillionaire soon.
Download the apps for all of your local stores so you can look for sales and compare prices. I just bought 6 pounds of hamburger from Safeway for $3 a pound. A small deep freezer, used, is very helpful for being able to stock up on sales. I shop Costco too.
It’s all the winning we’re doing here in America; doesn’t it feel good?
That’s OK Walmart will do their duty and absorb all those nasty tariffs. By December. Trust me. There’s time. And don’t you know costs are DOWN?!?
Clever metaphor for tariffs: an APC UPS plugged into itself.
Thanks Trump!
Dude! Trump said that prices are down. Who are you going to believe, Trump or your lying eyes.?
Check out your local asian markets (vietnamese, thai, etc)
You can buy really good food, in bulk, at super super cheap prices.
And for a quick lunch at work, they have phenomenal lunch platter specials. There is a vietnamese place near me, for $10 you get enough food in their lunch platter special for both lunch AND dinner, no joke.
The tariffs are getting passed on to you.
Walmart is paying more so you pay more too.
It’s all corporate greed!
On the plus side, our president has pointed out that Walmart’s Thanksgiving meal is cheaper this year. Of course, it includes fewer items and smaller servings, so… lol. I guess it’s easy to believe prices are going down when you haven’t shopped for yourself ever in your life, and you have sycophants telling you what a great job you’re doing..🙄
The brand names at the supermarket are even MORE expensive, FYI.
Everything has been going up, you’re only noticing now.
Im glad I’m not the only one complaining. I used to buy a set of pajamas for about $10.98. Now they are $16.98 to $19.98. Sweaters $20 bucks. 1 pair of sweat pants $16.98. I noticed they cut the regular price tags off the pajamas as well. I just cant afford clothes anymore. Clearance rack was like you said, a couple of dollars off.
It’s probably not just Walmart. A lot of it ties back to tariffs, higher transportation costs, and supplier markups that retailers pass on
Walmart tried to absorb the tariffs longer than other stores, now it’s your turn.
it was predicted that the full impact of the tariffs would show up around sept-oct of this year. Maga voted for this
These days i find it helpful to shop at a variety of stores, buy generics where possible, and to avoid buying new clothes as long as possible.
Vo5 or walmarts equate brand for shampoo/conditioner, or bulk sized bottles from costco.
Check Sam’s Club or Costco, they have really good deals on clothes.
When news sources start talking about inflation due to tariffs, companies raise prices whether or not their costs actually do go up, because……the customers have already even conditioned that prices are going to go up and it is out of the hands of the company and due to some external cause. And, those increases occur before any true costs hit their supply line. If the market allows price increases they institute them.
if there’s a costco in your area, go there. they sell inexpensive clothes and footwear as well.
Unfortunately they’ve been going up a lot for the last couple of years
Aldi is still the lowest prices around here unless you buy bulk. I found 85% ground beef for $3.99/lb in 10 pound bags at a local butcher shop. Rest Depot has chicken breasts under $2/lb in 10 lb bags. Amazon and Sams has canned goods in bulk at around $.75/can for tomatoes, corn, beans etc.
It is a lot of work to grocery shop now.
Yeah I was going to get some goldfish crackers since my grandkids will be here this weekend. The big boxes at Walmart and Amazon are $10. Sorry kids.
Aldi’s is much cheaper.
Yes, it’s tariffs. You mean the businesses didn’t absorb that cost like Fat Donald promised? SHOCK ME!!!!
We use to go to Walmart , 40 mins on the freeway both ways. Two weeks ago I noticed Stop and shop had Tp and paper towels that were only a dollar difference than Walmart. So now we just go 5 mins away and forget about Walmart .
If you want clothes that are not super expensive but still good quality look at 32° online. They always have great deals. And then maybe go in on a Costco card with a friend or family member and split the cost. Ground beef is 599 a pound for the regular beef. Andthere are other multiple things that you could probably purchase that would be cheaper than shopping at Walmart right now.
Go to Aldi or Lidl and you’ll have those cheap prices again.
Costco has been and will continue to be the only educated choice for basic staple items, such as milk, eggs, half n half, breads, etc. Even the ground beef at Costco will not run you $8/Lb
Have you been asleep for 5 years?
Our kitchen faucet has lasted us a long time, but it’s been leaking from spots that have (I guess?) rusted out, for a while now. I had been rigging it up to minimize mess and getting by but we finally got to “enough is enough” so I started browsing for new ones.
Nothing fancy. I am far from wealthy lol. I ended up having to go to Lowe’s for their store brand because it was less expensive and better quality than Wal-Mart’s Mainstays brand they had in stock. Thought that was kinda crazy.
I don’t ever buy meat there but I was also grabbing groceries for my grandmother and noticed those ground beef prices. Absolutely bonkers. And we’re in a poor county in TN, $8/pound is crazy for about everyone here.
I don’t buy ground beef any more. It’s outrageous. Walmart sells frozen 1 lb rolls of ground turkey for $1.99. I use that pretty much exclusively in place of ground beef.
Burlington & tjmaxx are where you find the good clothes deals. Walmart clothes generally shrink , fire me and my son anyway
Pricing up, package volume down.
One country: China.
I realized not too long ago that the things for sale on Walmart and Amazon were quite literally the same things available on Temu at a higher markup. They’ve always been squeezing us for whatever we’ll give up.
The clothes, I know! I saw that too.
If you have a Dollar General near you, the prices on *some* things are still reasonable. I usually only go there when we’re traveling but the one near us is closing so I dropped in. They still have a $1 section! Most of Dollar Tree is $1.50 and up now.
I feel you, I’ve been noticing it everywhere TOO! My weekly Aldi shop is almost 30% more for the same staples. The chocolate bar I’ve been getting for years was usually $2.49. I reached for it last week and noticed it was $3.99. I didn’t buy it. 😭
I’m hoping all this nonsense settles down bc going into debt to feed and clothe your family definitely does NOT make us great again. ;(
I’ve noticed the same. A small container of boring ground black pepper was 3 dollars. Then next week, it was suddenly 6 dollars. Are the pepper people on strike? Do the pepper plants have mad cow disease?
I know coffee’s rising, but the same can of great value brand decaf I always bought was 9 one week…then shrunk by 2 ounces and priced at 17 the next. Beyond ridiculous.
Gladly shopped elsewhere…found national brand names for less and bought there. WM’s loss. I’m not going to be their chump.
Where I live, they are still fifty cents to a dollar per item lower than the big popular chain grocery stores. Sometimes more. Granted I don’t buy meat.
