Long story short, my wife has had a tough time finding a job. She was a VP of Marketing for a B2C company and was laid off at the beginning of the year. I truly believe she’s great at what she does and could succeed on her own.

Has anyone here had success starting a marketing business? How did you approach it, and what she expect?

We’re financially stable on my salary, but we’d both like some extra spending money. After 11 months of searching, she’s getting frustrated, and I’m starting to think it might be time for her to build something herself rather than wait for a full-time offer.

Any advice or lessons learned from those who have taken this path would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Finding the right job for someone that is very senior is very difficult. I’ve built a services company from bootstrap to exit. I can say it was the most fulfilling thing I ever did. There are some differences in tech and marketing services companies. Tech services companies get waves of new technologies and trends that they can work with. Marketing does have some of those but not quite to the same extent.

Running a business is very different than having a job. But excellent credentials can put her ten paces ahead of dozens of people I know that have succeeded. So I would say she should give it a try.

    2. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to start small and stay focused. Don’t try to rebuild the whole corporate structure right away. Offer one clear service that solves a real pain point, get a few clients, and build from there.

Also, lean into her network – those old contacts are gold when starting out. The first few projects often come from people who already trust your work.

Since she was in marketing.. do you know if she would be interested in affiliate marketing? Its a business model where you are promoting companies products through their affiliate programs for commissions. I am with 2 training programs that provide the training and tools for the beginner to get started. Will share more if curious

It’s good to have good freelance producer/project manager at the ready if and when a project comes in.
