I realize why they suggest that. But like people around the world cook and leave stuff out for like 8hrs and they eat them and no problem. Heck! I even have eaten leftover meat or pizza or other shit in life that left outside overnight.

Are LLMs biased? Even if I explain them the above, they keep on insisting to throw everything out just to be safe. My man in the balkans, and easterwards people leave food out way more!

Tldr: I don't wanna throw food away, but LLMs like Chatgpt insist that ik gonna pretty much die if I even have a bite.

Fell asleep and forgot chicken burger on the counter. All LLMs suggest to throw it out.

Where do you live … is it really cold? If you are in Tampa … throw it out. If you are somewhere in the 20-40 you probably are fine if you keep your kitchen cool because I think the coolers for them are in the 30s.

If it was thawed overnight toss it. It sucks but its not worth the risk.

Potential doctor bills will cost more than the chicken just take the L.

    3. Bacterial growth can reach dangerous levels after more than 2 hours for food like that left unrefrigerated. You may be fine, you may get really sick if you eat. You are at a higher risk of food poisoning if you eat it now as opposed to refrigerating it within 2 hours.

    4. it’s definitely not advisable but you would probably be fine. especially if you don’t have a sensitive stomach. go for it

Eating food that could potentially get you sick is not being frugal… it’s being cheap and taking unnecessary risks. As someone who used to cook professionally, don’t eat meat that sat out overnight. Also, why do you need ChatGPT to give you info that should be common sense? Jesus… what is the world coming to?

    6. I would toss it. Instead of thinking about it as a waste of food, look at it as saving yourself from potentially missed work from being sick 😱

I’ve got food safety certifications, passed microbiology with flying colours, am VERY aware of safety standards when serving other people…I’d personally eat the hell outta that chicky burger with no regrets 🤷‍♀️

    8. You may be fine. You may be incredibly sick. I personally dislike being sick more than I dislike throwing out some food.

    9. The danger zone is real. Between 40 and 140 degrees bacteria increases rapidly.

Some people have to learn this themselves before they’ll belive this. After a couple of times puking so hard you shit yourself, most people realize it’s not wasting food to throw it away.

The food is already wasted because you left it out. If you dont want to waste food dont leave it out.

Or do eat it and see. Im not your dad.

    10. The standard and safest answer will be to throw it out. I believe the FDA recommends throwing meat out if it’s been in the “danger zone” (40 degrees to 140 degrees Fahrenheit) for over 2 hours. I’m sure that’s what most LLMs are pulling from to give their answers. But that’s to basically guarantee that it’s safe. In reality? You might be able to get away with it. I’ve fallen asleep after making a giant pot of pasta and meat, and put it in the fridge the next morning in a panic. Ate the whole thing over the next week and was fine.

If it looks and smells OK, then you try a bite and it doesn’t taste strange, I’d be comfortable eating it

    11. Why are you asking LLMs literally anything ?? Also I wouldn’t eat it personally, but you’re right that many people would without issue. But the LLMs you are asking (again, why?) are saying that because the fact of the matter is that it is not reliably safe. LLMs can’t have “bias” the way that human beings can, but they have been fed a lot of info across the internet – and all info about it being safe is completely personal, anecdotal, and not represented in data. Whereas it not being reliably safe is repeatedly evidenced in a quantifiable way across many sources. When I say it isn’t safe, I don’t mean there is a 100% chance you will get sick, but it is unfathomably more likely for you to get sick than from eating chicken burger handled within evidence based safety guidelines.

Sorry if this sounds harsh. I’m food safety certified for work and have quite a lot of old-fashioned derision when it comes to LLMs. TL;DR: it is not safe to eat it statistically but you may not have anything bad happen if you eat it.

    12. Meat is dangerous. Ground meat is highly dangerous.

Chicken is already disgustingly dangerous, so ground chicken is disgustingly highly dangerous.

(Only referring to improper handling or preparing, here, I love meat!)

    13. Otherwisefantastic on

You should not trust what ai says without fact checking it for yourself. It gets stuff incorrect often.

It is not safe to leave meat out at room temperature overnight and then eat it. People in other countries and cultures may do that, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe, it means if they don’t get sick they are lucky and have survivors bias.

Wasting money sucks, but it doesn’t suck as much as food poisoning, trust me.

    14. LLMs aren’t a great source for medical advice, but in this case they’re right.

If it’s raw chicken, throw it the fuck out. Ground meat is a breeding ground for bacteria– lots of surface area that’s all been exposed to possibly contaminated surfaces. I don’t care what they do in Europe, they all have socialized health care.

I’ve had food poisoning before from imitation crab that sat in the fridge too long. I ended up sitting on the toilet with a bucket in my hands overnight, expelling everything in my digestive tract from both ends at once.

It’s not worth it for a chicken burger. Some meat can be left out, poultry isn’t one of them unless it’s cured first.

    15. Proud_Possibility256 on

The chicken in the burger was most likely ultra processed anyway. Put it in the oven for 20 mins to kill any bacteria that possibly has been growing.

    16. Iam_so_Roy_Batty on

Give it to me. I’ll let you know if I get sick. It really depends on your constitution. but there are questions I have. Is this something you made or bought? Wrapped, in a container or just sitting on a plate? Condiments?

    17. Mrs_Magic_Fairy_Dust on

sometimes, you just gotta use your own judgement. “Professional” advice is always going to be cautious to reduce their liability.

I’ve worked in restaurants for nearly twenty years. I’ve learned from health inspectors first hand how things should be done. I am often the stickler in my fine dining restaurant when it comes to food safety practices. When cooking for others, it’s a matter of respect. I know and abide by all standards as a respected professional in my field.

That being said, I have eaten a shocking amount of left-on-counter food in my life. I push all limits when it comes to “food safety” in my kitchen. Pizza is best at room temperature. A large lunch can sit out all day to be picked on. Food left overnight in the pan just goes in the fridge tomorrow. No big deal. The only reason this probably works is that I’ve been doing it for decades and my body has adjusted. Doctors likely don’t recommend my way, but this is my gut biome and I’ll do what I want with it.
