I’m a bit of a data nerd, so I decided to audit my bank statements from last year.

I found 4 subscriptions I swore I had cancelled (a forgotten streaming service, a pro version of an app I don't use, etc.).

The total wasted money was around $450.

It’s embarrassing because I usually spend hours looking for a $10 discount on a flight, but I was bleeding money silently in the background.

Just a reminder to everyone: Audit your recurring payments this weekend. It takes 10 minutes and you might find "free money."

I tracked my "small" recurring expenses for a year. The "subscription creep" was costing me more than my car insurance

I was just thinking about this earlier I’ve cancelled several subscriptions over the past year or so, either to protest nefarious behavior on the part of the C-suite or simply because the juice was no longer worth the squeeze. Media corps can also fuck right off with forcing ads into paid subscription content.

We’re down to five bucks a months for PBS Passport and my husband’s Sirius subscription which I wish he’d give up, but threatening to cancel every six months keeps it dirt cheap. We do have Walmart+ for food delivery, but one of our credit cards reimburses that and includes Paramount+ or something similar.

I’ve replaced my viewing with out-of-state patron cards to a couple of libraries which provide access to all electronic materials, including audiobooks and streaming video content through Kanopy. I’ve no doubt that we were spending $80-100/mo. in subscription fees at one point and it is sobering to realize how quickly that adds up.
