Filed for an amended return on 6/24/25…it’s now December and it says my amended return has been accepted but not processed “due to a delay”.

I know the standard is 16 weeks for amended returns, but we are reaching the 6 month mark.I’m trying to get in touch with a person so I can see what the hold up is.

Does anyone have a phone number they recommend to get me to the right department? I’ve tried the main line (1040) but it boots me off and won’t give me many options.

Amended return taking over 16 weeks?

    1. Try calling 800-829-1040 and say the words “accounts management”.

Not enough employees. They were sent home for over 30 days and only bare bones phone reps were working during the budget shutdown. So the backlog of work is even bigger than before.

    2. these-things-happen on

      Return to the “main line”.

Have a copy of the original and amended returns and all supporting documents available.

When you reach a prompt, say “accounts management”.

When you reach a representative, let them know the tax year and when you filed the 1040-X, and yes, you’ve been checking WMAR for updates.

Depending on the account conditions, the likely response will be “sorry for the delay, I will add a note to your case, call back in 30 days”.

    3. try calling the taxpayer advocate service, sometimes they can help with stuck returns, their number should be on the irs website, they might expedite the process for you
