We love to joke in the comments here: "wut profit" and "hodl til zero." But I'd really like to get some insights from people who were in the 2020 boom and the eventual collapse.
Hell, maybe you were here earlier than that.
This time around, what have you been doing differently? What lessons do you feel have actually worked in your favor? Or, what did you see work brilliantly in the 2020 saga that utterly flopped this time around?
This might end up being a rehash of the greatest hits of crypto advice (don't tell your friends or family about crypto, get a cold wallet, etc.), but maybe it can also help some people out who are new to the fold.
If you were here for the 2020 boom into the 2021 retraction, what have you been doing differently this time around?

Honestly just buy Bitcoin and do nothing for 6 years
Nothing, DCA
Buy, buy more when its cheap, profit
taking profit
DCA BTC with a side of ETH.
Don’t buy bullshit coins looking for a get rich quick scenario. Stack BTC and if you absolutely have to f with alts do it very cautiously.
I arrived in 2017 and cashed out. Reinvested and cashed tf out.
Its not profit if you didnt do anything with it. Waiting for ETH to get to about to 2k, I’ll buy 10. Sell at 3.5k, no need to wait till 4k and up.
Anything more than 50% is fantastic
I realized the futility of trying to time perfect entry and exit. Weight 75% plus in BTC. Try speculate less and only hold projects that you actually use so you understand what is hype and what is real.
Here since 2013. Look at Fear/Greed, do the opposite. only DCA
Not selling to buy back in lower
Not freaking out when the market moves 5-10% overnight, that is for sure.
I got in before the 2017 run up. I watched BTC and ETH 20x, then retrace 90-95% the following year. I held BTC from 20 to 3.5 and ETH from 1.1k to $80. I also watched like 90% of the ICO bullshit go to zero, and take pretty much every alt with it. The vast majority (about 95%) of projects from this time were removed from exchanges, and about 80% of them were just straight up scams to begin with.
What did I do when it all came crashing down? I just sat there. I didn’t do anything. The fundamentals of this space didn’t change, I still thought it was a good investment, so I just waited. I did DCA into a bit more BTC, but as the price started to rise again, I decided I didn’t have the risk apatite for more of this asset class, so I’ve just stayed put. And to be frank right now, I feel overexposed.
Stayed put through the 2020’s boom and bust too. No regrets what so ever. This market has shown me that all I need to do is wait, and not overexpose myself. When people say “don’t invest what you can’t afford to lose”, you need to listen, because this shit can pull back 80% *fast.* You need to be very ready to keep your money in the market.
Don’t chase alts, stick to ETH and BTC, don’t get emotional, be patient, and you need to be certain that the money you have going in, isn’t money you’ll need any time soon, because anything can happen, and the worst thing for you, would be needing to sell a loss because your dog got sick or some shit.
Nothing is making money out there. I’m going to stick with BTC and saving up money for the next bull
Take profit and sell everything but BTC. You do not want to be holding those alts during bear market
Was here for the last 2 cycles, held through both. I took my profits this time and sold everything in early November while BTC was still a bit above 100K. I could be completely wrong (nothing new for me) but I felt like this year’s bull run was winding down.
Hoping my exchange doesn’t fold like voyager….
I sold at $106k when it pulled back from $120k and started to DCA in yesterday with weekly buys. I’m confident it will go lower, but I don’t mind losing money in the short term in case I’m wrong.
I bought in 2016. DO NOTHING
Aside from holding Btc and Eth I’ve completely disconnected from any thoughts about use case and the value of any other token.
I got in very early to MATIC and Sol and also BNB. I could give you my view on each but ultimately BNB is an exchange coin, Sol aside from its insanely questionable tokenomics has a plunge protection team and Matic, I don’t event want to talk about.
Now I hold Btc and Eth, some Hype (another exchange coin) and the rest I trade on the numbers.
So the biggest change in my thinking is a complete disconnect from the use case or value of any token. Now I trade on the metrics I’ve decided to use and don’t care what the token is.
With the exception of Eth, Btc and Hype. I still hold a big chunk of BNB as well but that’s trade-able as far as I’m concerned.
I took profits at 120 – 125k. Not enough, sadly.
Still just as regarded as usual nothing different
Taking profits, not becoming depressed over 60% drops
not buying crypto
Down 75% in 2021, down 50% now. Maybe end of next bull run I’ll be down 25%, and in 2032 I’ll be back to break even and cash out.
Nothing. Well, im trying harder to buy more more regularly
ACTUALLY TAKE PROFITS.
No seriously, I would be many levels above if I had actually followed this…
I tell my self it’s different this time
I sold all BTC at/around ATH this time 🙂 (I bought it ATH last time lol)
this time i have completely avoided altcoins.. ended up working out
I dabbled in bitcoin + shitcoins mainly solana and eth and ended up losing 20k on solana. Since 2021 I’ve only been buying bitcoin using Ben cowen dynamic dca strategy and it was best thing I could have done. Zero thinking involved and no stress. Made everything back and very close to playing with house money now. You just need a strategy and stick to it. Need to have a long term mindset and discipline. Biggest lesson I learned is just stick to bitcoin and either dca or some form of it. I like the dynamic dca strat because it has defined prices to take profit whereas regular dca you just buy forever.
Last time I took no profits. This time, one limit sell order filled. Oh well at least it is something.
Stick to BTC and take profits near all time highs
Nothing. It’s business as usual.
I would get in and out at the right times and make more profit
I exited and took profit when crypto ads started popping up on radio, TV and billboards 3 months ago.
No blow off top = the game is still on.
I am buying up alts any time ETH is below $3,000. I still fully believe there is going to be an alt season before the cycle is done and until I am seeing a $1000 AAVE I am not leaving.
Absolutely nothing different. Still holding through it all
Nothing
