Protests over energy prices continued in Almaty on Wednesday resulting in major unrest in Kazakhstan’s largest city.

Massive crowds gathered in the city centre near local government offices where fires were lit, while other groups seized control of vehicles belonging to security forces. Riot police were deployed en masse on the city streets.

Protests are underway in Almaty, Uralsk, Aktau, Aktobe, Shymkent, and other cities. The regions are experiencing problems with communication, internet connection, and television broadcasting.

According to Kazakhstan media, demonstrators are storming buildings, setting up barricades, clashing with security forces, and causing arson.
