I really can’t stand my night guard. Over the years, I’ve tried so many different ones, each more expensive than the last, and they’re all custom-made to fit my mouth perfectly. Yet, the moment I put it in, I feel an overwhelming urge to gag. It’s like my body just rejects it. And on top of that, I’m curious about how others manage to wake up feeling refreshed in the morning. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Do you grind or clench your teeth at night and hate your night guard?

    1. I’ve been wearing one for years, I put it in last thing at night as I’m falling asleep and yank it out as soon as I open my eyes. I’ve had it filed down more than once until it felt less bulky. You could try asking if they can shorten it or make it a little thinner.

    2. I can only wear my night guard for a few hours before I wake up and take it out. Sometimes I find it in the bed. I don’t even remember taking it out lol I stopped wearing it though. Ans honestly, grated incroplastix in my mouth doesn’t seem too great 😅

Invisalign makes a retainer that is much thinner and more comfortable. The key is to have both an upper and lower one. I use it every night and can’t imagine sleeping without it. When I had the old-fashioned hard plastic, bulky nightguard for just my upper teeth I was still biting through it, and it was a bit gaggy.

    4. Night guards didn’t work for me and I would get horrible facial pain and headaches until I discovered one called the NTI. It has a ridge under the front two teeth that prevents you from fully closing your jaw at night. Unfortunately, it wears down and I can’t find a dentist to make me a new one. The last dentist wanted me to spend thousands on a mouthguard I’d never tired and I refused. But he wouldn’t make me the kind I know works. So I’m ruining my teeth and getting headaches again because of this. I hate dentists.

My grinding was caused by chronic stress. Starting and sticking to an exercise regime that included stretching deleted the problem. Highly recommend.

    6. There have been more than a few times when I’ve lost my night guard at night. I don’t mind it at all but apparently my sleeping-self sometimes takes it out and launches it across the room lol

    7. Commenting to see responses. I’m in the same boat and just shelled out the cash for a new one and it’s awful. I don’t gag, but they all make me grind harder so now if i miss a night i feel like I’m breaking all my teeth 🙁
