As title implies, I'm wondering which one would be a better travel rewards AND daily use card that goes alongside my current wallet. (looking for a one card solution)
If this helps:
– Currently have the CapitalOne SavorOne and Discover IT CCs.
– Credit Score is 710.
– 40-60% of my purchases are grocceries.
– Subscriptions: Spotify & Costco
– Home Airport is JFK
– Don't plan on traveling more than 1-2 a year

Venture X is a no-brainer. JFK has a Capital One lounge, you shop at Costco (Visa only), and your SavorOne cashback can be converted to points for your Venture X, which allows for solid coverage of key categories. Personally, I don’t even consider the Amex Gold a travel card. More of a lifestyle one IMO, with only small/ancillary travel-related benefits.
The main thing before going for points is to set a goal in my opinion.
A goal needs to be pretty specific, such as JFK-FCO in October 2027.
Then work backwards to see what points options would be to achieve that goal.
A secondary concern could be that Amex isn’t as widely accepted as Visa/Mastercard
Beware the Venture X. That card requires using Capital One’s portal. I wouldn’t want to do that do I’d suggest skipping that card.
I’d run the math with your current grocery + dining spend against the points earned and annual fee (minus credits you’d normally use). You already have the Savor, so adding the Gold is only getting 1x more points per dollar spent. The nice thing about the VX, is it will let you pool your Savor points and make them transferable. If you are comfortable booking in the Capital One portal, then you can earn 10x (hotels) and 5x (flights). That’s unbeatable and makes the Gold a hard sell. All that said, it depends on your spend and how much of the Gold’s credits you’ll use.
As someone who has both the VX and the Gold, I vote for Venture X EASY and here’s why:
1. Already have Savor, covers food so it conflicts with the Gold
2. JFK has a great C1 lounge, Gold doesn’t even grant you lounge access. Whether or not that’s important to you, I’m not sure but its at least something
3. Infrequent traveler, so booking through a portal is not a big deal and is easily doable. Even one trip you can knock out that credit. Plus the portal is the best in the business due to price match
4. Venture X works as a catch-all, which you don’t have in your current setup. If you’re looking for a one card setup, the VX will earn twice as many points as Amex Gold on purchases outside of food
5. VX works at Costco, Amex does not if I remember correctly
