I really want to get my own car and my parents will be much more likely to let me buy what I want if I pay for everything myself, including insurance. I can not find anywhere that will give me any kind of quote or any idea of what to expect to be paying for just a standard insurance plan so if anyone could give me even a rough idea that'd be helpful.

I'd rather hear the higher numbers than the lower ones because I'd rather plan for more rather than end up short.

    1. Most states won’t allow you to have a policy as the named insured at your age. You’ll probably need to be added to your patent’s policy until you turn 18.

    2. Back in the ’70s when I started driving, what you described was pretty common.

Today, in most states, it’s financially idiotic. You’re trying to be responsible but one of the ways you need to be responsible is to compare multiple options to achieve the suitable effect.

Option one is that you buy a car in your name and get insurance in your name. Get a price, call at least six or so insurance companies, gets three credible quotes

Option two is what most people do now. Option two, your parents buy the car, you can be listed as one of the owners but it’s an ore not an and so that any one of you can sell it. You might well buy it but your parents are on the list. And they will insure it through their family plan and they will actually call around different insurance companies and actually be sure they get the best price for the family. You’re in the family. Some insurance companies in some states allow you to specify that you’re driving that specific car, I’m in California and they put my son who’s 18 into the most expensive car, I don’t have any option. But it’s still cheaper than all the other alternatives I found.

Don’t let this be a matter of principle, let it be a matter of economics. Whatever is cheapest, that’s the right thing to do. In most people’s situations, the cheapest thing will be for you to be under your parents insurance policy as long as possible. They really ramped up the premium for people who are newer drivers way more than they used to.
