I'm trying to save money right now because I'm moving into my own place. So money is tight! Also, I love a cup of coffee in the morning. But unfortunately with that cup of coffee I like to eat something sweet. It could be a doughnut, a couple of Oreos, etc. So I think by switching to tea that might help me break my habit of sweets in the morning. I still want a caffeine buzz from the tea. But I don't know what kind of tea to get. eventually I want to go caffeine free. Anyway, what are your experiencs saving money switching to tea from coffee? Was the savings substantial? Thanks

    1. Black tea and green tea bag’s from your local Asian grocery store are gonna be cheap and good quality tea.

    2. Switching from coffee to tea to avoid eating sweets to save money is a super stretch. What about you own up to your sweet tooth and you stop eating cookies? What about not having sweet things in the house rather than switching the drink? Because I think you’ll still have the sweets, just with a different drink…

    3. What’s your reasoning for wanting to go caffeine free? Just curious. There’s 0 proven negative health effects and many positive effects.

    4. I switched from coffee to tea, but it didn’t save me much money.

Buying in bulk and making it yourself is the real money saver.

But if switching to tea breaks your sugar habit, then yes, it will save you money.

    5. Keep drinking coffee and cut out the sweets. Maybe sweeten your coffee a bit and have some fruit. But part of being frugal is spending on what matters to you and cutting out things that don’t.

I switched from coffee to tea as I found I experienced less of an immediate caffeine spike, and will share, I love dunking biscuits (crisp, snappy cookies) in it. As a fellow sweets with morning hot beverage person, I’m unsure the switch may stop you.

To start with, I recommend a good Irish breakfast so you’re not cold turkey on your caffeine intake. Then I went to English breakfast to shake it up. 😅 I actually started brewing a double batch with a black tea and a green tea or fruit based tea and that was very pleasant and was a good way to cut back on caffeine. After you can go straight to green tea which according to many drinkers provides better sustained energy.

    8. Coffee is my last remaining vice. Yeah, it’s gotten expensive, but by making it at home instead of stopping off at a coffee every day, the impact of the increased cost is mitigated somewhat. I drink tea in the evenings but refuse to give up my morning coffee in order to save a few dollars a month.

    9. Buy tea from an Asian store. Indian stores have great deals for bulk purchases. Then make friends with other tea drinkers ( post on Facebook to find them ). Now bulk buy the tea and split up with your tea friends. Save a ton of money. Make friends.

    10. Buy whatever that is discounted in the store. Stop adding milk, if that’s what you are doing now. Stop adding sugar, if you can. Stop eating sweet stuff in the morning. All good for you health and bank account.

Anytime I went caffeine free was abrupt and from all to nothing. Same for sugar. Someone suggested drinking water; that really is a great advice, if you can get used to it. I also learnt enjoying just the hot water from my friends from Far East.

Otherwise, I don’t think you can save much money switching from coffee to tea. If anything, in my experience at least, you get more coffee for the same price compare to tea bags — assuming you don’t want to go loose leaf tea.

I buy the Lipton Lemon “Black tea with Lemon peels from Spain” bags. They seriously get me going!

You wanna go caffeine free? I did too so switched from coffee to Bengal Spice tea from twinings. Very satisfied

I feel your pain. Here’s the solution: drink a cup of tea first and the enjoy a cup of coffee with cream and sugar. It’s wonderful and saves a lot of money to put towards a dream home. It worked for me.

    14. Black tea or yerba mate if you still want a kick. Herbal teas are chill but won’t replace that coffee buzz. Just avoid falling into the fancy loose-leaf rabbit hole or you’ll be broke in a new way

    15. We switched from coffee to tea.

It saves us a little but I really like fancy loose leaf tea so I knew I wouldn’t save much. We do save a little, but, I like bougie tea!

We buy loose leaf tea from a couple places local to us, Arbor Teas and TeaHaus. They both ship internationally.

“Are there any tea shops local to you? They sometimes will brew up sample flavors and pass out samples.

My favorite “sweet tooth” teas are chili chocolate, passion fruit (which I like as iced tea), and almond milk tea. To all of these I add a little milk and sugar when served hot, but not much. That satisfies the sweet craving without a lot of calories or snacking.

Chili Chocolate is my “wind down” tea even though it has some caffeine. It’s pricey, but is favorite.

      Herbals are caffeine free.

If you want to switch just to save money, try your local Asian or middle eastern shops. You can also get regular plain tea from the grocery store for cheap , but you can add cardamom or cinnamon or other grind able spices to make it more flavorful.

I like tea over coffee because well, I just don’t like coffee. But also yes it’s a bit cheaper. Tea is also better for the environment especially if you buy in bulk. I also like all the different flavors.

Just how much do you think you’re gonna save by switching? It certainly won’t be life changing and definitely won’t help you put extra down for a house. My point is, aside from skipping out on sweets, what’s the point?

High end teas are no cheaper. The grocery store stuff in tea bags can be really cheap. Just find one you can tolerate.

In summer want a cool refrigerated drink and my well water in summer maybe not so tasty. So I had these 12oz bottles. Put one tea bag in a bottle, fill with tap water. Put in refrigerator. It quickly turns to tea. I prefer coffee and tea without sugar. Nice cool summer drink, costs a nickel, not a lot…. You can get a second bottle of tea from that one tea bag, but its not very tasty. So for a nickel per bottle, good enough.

Found the cheap bag tea I prefer is Tetley British Blend black tea. Bought the 320 bag box of it, pretty economical, least when I bought it. Oh tried it hot, nope I just dont like hot tea. Unsweetened ice tea is fine.

Oh and I have a cut off point for coffee I will drink. Cant stand the el cheapo stuff. Its robusto with lot caffeine and no taste, thats why the cheap stuff comes with artificial flavorings. 8 o’clock original whole bean, about the cheapest I can tolerate. Beyond that not worth drinking coffee. I actually drink coffee for the taste, care less about caffeine. Can get very cheap caffeine pills like truckers use if you want caffeine, they are cheaper than tea.

Yerba mate has higher caffeine than other types of tea, similar to coffee iirc. I discovered it when I was pregnant. One cup of coffee was allowed but the smell of coffee made me vomit (even though I love coffee) so I switched to yerba mate.

    19. I used to make 1/2 pots of coffee instead of full pots. After that one 1/2 pot I switch to tea -I drink black tea that’s a little expensive because it comes from Ireland but its so worth it. Not even close to how expensive coffee is.

    20. Try crackers with Peanut butter with a little bit of honey on top …much cheaper and better for you

    21. Pristine_Guava_1523 on

I want to switch to tea because of the cost of coffee but it’s hard because I just don’t enjoy tea quite as much. But I have found some teas I really like that I drink in the afternoons at work, when I used to waste money at the coffeeshop every week to keep me going.

    22. Swap out your sweets for seasonal fruit. In the long run, what is better for your health will likely be better for your wallet. Can’t put a price on the feeling health gives you!

    23. thesentienttoadstool on

My favorite type is earl grey tea. It has an inherent richness about it that scratches the same itch as coffee (for me, at least)

    24. There’s a lot of different opinions in here, but this is what I’ll say. When I drank coffee, I also liked having a little treat in the morning. Now I drink green tea (less caffeine but still enough) with honey. The taste of green tea is kind of acquired? It’s got an aftertaste that I find doesn’t mesh well with sweets. Ergo, I don’t have sweet treats when I drink it. Maybe this will work for you.

And yeah, tea is infinitely cheaper than coffee. If you want a good green tea, get one with lemon flavor and add just a bit of honey to it afterwards. Also, the longer you steep it the stronger that aftertaste will be.

Like any habit, you’ll have just to be consistent. And if you don’t have the Oreos available, you won’t be tempted to eat them. Good luck!

    25. The last Fortune 500 office job I had, I’d make and drink the crappy office coffee like most everyone else. But sometimes I’d grab one of the Lipton teabags that were in the supply cabinet, 100 count box bought by the company. Every so often, about half of the tea in the box would magically disappear. Now that’s cheap tea for some enterprising staffer… not telling you to do that, just sayin’…
