huh? we are about to hit 7000 in the sp500. interest rates are at 5.5% after hitting 8% last year.

I just put gas and it was $2.90. investments are through the roof. property value has increased. rents are doing fine.

      excited for 2026.

    2. I know this is r/economics and not r/politics , and if we’re honest, the politics sub isn’t so much about politics as it is schadenfreude. But this comment can be seen as behavioral economics and so I think it fits.

Pointing at MAGA voters and laughing is not the way out of this because:

      1. A rising tide lifts all boats, and a falling tide does the same in reverse.
      2. To win, we need some MAGA voters to start voting another way. This is because our political system is set up to disproportionately favor rural areas.

Pointing and laughing only makes them dig in more. They did not vote MAGA because of economics and most of them (and most of the US for that matter) don’t understand economic basics anyway. They voted for MAGA because of a generation of policy that destroyed the working class and destroyed rural areas, and culturally they are seen by the city folks as lesser than. Those city folks are today almost exclusively Democrat, exclusively college educated, and much more wealthy than anyone rural.

Failure to understand this, continuing to drive cultural wedges, does not fix the issues we face and only makes them worse. The solution to our economic problems is to get rid of MAGA, the way to do that is to build social bridges with their voters.

If you want to win, you have to do things that are uncomfortable. That is politics. Full stop.

You mean it’s not working for broke ass liberals. I work in the construction industry and it is absolutely booming right now, we’re booked out into 2027.

Cry me a river, don’t really care. My neighborhood association straight up verbally attacked me for flying a Harris flag and then turned me into the USPS for putting flyers in their mailboxes.

Now a bunch of them are laid off, it gives me a grin as I leave for work every morning. Fuck em, they were warned

    5. The issue is that too many people still view Economics as something one-dimensional. It’s not STEM. In reality Economics is just a way to describe social systems and designing these systems should be done to reach normative goals. To put it in a neutral way: Trump did an economic restructuring, which is done to increase autarky, lower debt, and increase private sector productivity. Does that imply, that the average joe is gonna have more money? No, at most there might be a correlation. But that doesn’t mean it’s bad, and neither does it mean it’s good, as it depends on what your personal goals and priorities are. That’s why trickle down Economics is non-sensical, as this mechanic depends on how the social system is designed.

    6. They dont care. They are fighting a holy war vs woke and wars require sacrifice. In fact, some of them feel lucky that they get the chance to suffer, like Jesus did.

    7. When in the last 50+ years have working class conservatives ever truly voted their wallet? If they did that you wouldn’t have right wing think tanks filling every election cycle with culture war wedge issue nonsense.

They’ve been at this for decades. H.W. Bush didn’t get elected on Reaganomics, he got elected on Willie Horton ads. His son didn’t win re-election on the failing war in Iraq or his economy – he got re-elected on state level anti-gay marriage amendments. And Trump/MAGA is just an even more concentrated high proof form of all that for them.

My dad has been looking for a job for almost a year now (major maga). This is someone with over 20 years of sales management experience and he refuses to believe that Trump isn’t doing anything other than a stellar job with the economy and everything else. Meanwhile he is about to lose the home he has had for 15 years+ years.

It makes me really sad seeing him watch Fox News every night lying to him about how great things in America are going. It also stresses me out to have to worry about him when I can barely afford a 1 bedroom apartment and have to skip at the very least one meal a day. These people are beyond saving even when their own lived in experience is showing all the signs to jump ship.

The reality is that if it was working for JUST THEM and no one else, they would be sitting smug on their cash piles because they don’t care about anyone but themselves. Even when it’s NOT working for them, they can’t bear to vote progressive because they can’t bear to see any social programs that might benefit a brown person for instance.
