I made two payments that were more than double the minimum on my Chase Freedom Unlimited that posted and cleared. Then I made three more payments (under $100) that all came back as returned this week. Chase stated that I selected a closed account for two of the payments, even though I unlinked the closed account over a year ago and took screenshots showing I selected the correct account. I called Chase twice about both returned payments and they didn’t give me the opportunity to send screenshots. I immediately paid those two return payments from the correct account as soon as I became aware of them. Now I get a notice that the third payment returned for insufficient funds (I made this payment days ago and thought it had been withdrawn already, and then I emptied the account because I’m about to close that particular checking account also). What is the likelihood Chase will close my accounts? I have another credit card with them with no returned payments and a new checking account with them that I keep the minimum in. I’ve had these Chase credit cards since 2017 and never paid late or had a minimum payment returned.

When do returned payments result in account closure?

Why did you make 5 separate smaller payments in such a small window that they all kicked back at the same time as returned?
Why were you making payments from an account that you were about to close?
