The Mediterranean maritime republics like Genoa, Ragusa, and the most prominent one, Venice, became immensely rich because of their trade relations.
A similar, albeit not same, tactic made the Dutch republic during the Golden age also very wealthy.
Could one say that "trade" was and stays the most lucrative sector?
And what might be modern-day equivalents? States like Singapore, Luxembourg, or places like Hong Kong? The global city system with it's connection to the world?
