6 year E-5 here. Bought a 2020 WRX a couple years back and it is modded to the gills. Well now my car is giving me problems and I currently have a $3700 bill waiting for me for a timing issue. Haven’t been the best with money in the past year. Im currently $12,732 in debt from an impulsive buying spree last year for the car and other hobbies. I snapped out of it and now I’m trying to bounce back but having a hard time. As far as the WRX goes, i feel I’m driving a ticking time bomb now. These cars are notorious for engine issues once mods are in place. I would like to get rid of my car but i want to do it with the car completely stock. I don’t have access to a shop to do it myself and the shop I got the work done from is quoting me $1200 to slap the old stock parts on. I have $23,200 in savings but I haven’t touched any of it yet and strictly only use it for emergency situations. Im at my wits end here so any advice would be appreciated.

    1. Any way you can get in touch with some engineers rates?

I know for the coast guard we have MK’s and they would slobber to touch anything involving grease and fixing.

Perks in making sure you keep in touch with everyone not just your designated battle buddies.

The other option is speaking with a finance manager at your base, you def need to speak with that and that’s a free resource. Also let your Chain of Command know, they need to know you’re driving a ticking time bomb which involves your safety which ultimately they are responsible for.

      Good luck

Get ride of the car, coming from a E-5 who had a big fancy truck and now has a Toyota Corolla

    3. you’re not stuck you just need to stop trying to protect every dollar at the same time as trying to escape the problem the wrx is already an emergency even if it doesn’t feel like one yet a $3700 timing bill plus known modded engine risk is exactly what that savings is for the cleanest move is use the savings to either fix it enough to sell or pay to return it to stock because that $1200 is basically a selling fee that likely gets you way more than selling a broken modded wrx dumping a running stock-ish wrx will hurt way less than riding it until it grenades then you’re stuck with a paperweight and debt stays the same you still keep a big chunk of savings after that and you can immediately knock out the $12k debt which frees cash flow fast being an e5 stability matters more than holding an emergency fund you’re scared to touch once the car is gone grab a boring cheap reliable beater and rebuild the savings the discipline fix already happened the math fix is just catching up now

No auto hobby shop on base? The mechanics there can also do work and can quote you a rate. Otherwise its a mechanic special with the stock parts in tow or sell as is.

As long as you disclose it you are clear. No lemon law for used cars but don’t be a shit head with a bait and switch.
