Hi all!

I’m a young professional working at a university doing data and financial analytics — along with some other tasks here and there. My university will help pay for any degree of my choosing (as long as I attend one of our state schools). I’m thinking of leveraging that benefit by getting a master’s in econ! I love working in the public sector and believe an econ ma will open more doors for my partner and I.

I tried a bunch of majors in undergrad but ended up majoring in Economics with a concentration in Data Analytics, and minors in Math and CS. I absolutely love economics; I did well in my econ courses, and even took two grad econ courses as an undergrad and did pretty well. I’m good at math and have calc i-iii, linear algebra, diff eq, discrete math, etc. under my belt too.

How strenuous would an econ ma be as a working adult? I’m nervous about how a graduate program might interfere with my relationships and social life.

Thanks in advance and have a great day!

Sounds like you already have a pretty good idea and solid math. So you’re in a good spot.

That said, studying is a full time job. And while easy masters degrees exist, they are often kinda bad and you shouldn’t go into one *expecting* it to be easy.

Ultimately it’s a question about what kind of concessions you are willing to make. You can scale back on your progress, take more time to finish your degree and have plenty of time for other things. But you can’t work a lot *and* finish your degree on time *and* have time for your social life. That’s not gonna happen. Even working full time and doing a degree is questionable. That’s two full time jobs. Even working 20 hours and getting a degree can be a lot, but that’s at least manageable if you’re ready to scale back on social activities. Doesn’t mean you can never see your friends, it means you’ll work, go to college, spend a significant amount of free time on your degree, and have *some* spare time for other things.
