Looking to own my own business in the field service industry. I currently a senior field service rep in defense and work on radars and missile systems deployed across the world. Money excellent but at the cost of not seeing my family for 4-9 months at a time and not being a business owner. It’s a life goal.
I’ve narrowed my learning/technical experience/ability/skill/interest to the civilian critical power industry.
After weeks of research and planning I want open a “generator compliance and maintenance business” or a “UPS compliance and maintenance businesses”
Both non installation businesses to start and the generator maintenance would be everything non invasive (heads not coming off)
ISSUES IM SEEING:
-OEM GENERATOR Co DO NOT OFFER TRAINING TOO INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS. FROM MY RESEARCH WITHOUT OEMs BLESSING YOU CANNOT GET A LOT OF DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS AND INFORMATION FROM OEM’S WITHOUT IT.
-UPS TRAINING IS A LITTLE EASIER BUT IS A EXTREMELY HIGH TRUST BUSINESS. WHY WOULD THEY SWITCH FOR A NATIONAL OR REGIONAL PROVIDER TO A LOCAL GUY LIKE ME?
Any guidance on the two questions would be truly appreciated, especially from those in the industry. I do understand most industries do have “dues to pay” but in my eyes working on mission critical missile system that save lives should be enough for me not to take a multi hundred thousand dollar pay cut just to work for caterpillar for two years to get certifications.
