I was having cancer treatment, with reduced income due to medical leave plus I had deductible and co-pays on medical bills, I asked Freedom Mortgage for a forbearance for hardship caused by medical reason. They told me I was approved, but never sent me a letter of approval with dates and terms. The agent told me, if my account says no payment due, then I am all set. He told me I didn't need to provide any documents.
About 3 and half months later, I receive a forecourse notice. I was ready to start paying again anyways. But they told me that the forbearance means I have to pay all the arrear during the forbearance period at once or lose my house. When the forbearance started, i was current. If i could not pay, because of cancer treatment, where will I find $13,000 at once after the treatment, when I just resume working. Besides, they told me I could extend the forbearance for up to 12 months, so I asked to extend it, while I pay the current and arrear. i asked for about 3 months.
But, they are vultures, they are just waiting for you to be at your lowest, so they can feed on your corpse. Even though i paid $4,000 upfront towards to $13,000 offered to pay another $4,000 in 2 to 3 weeks. and at least another $4,000 in an additional 30 days, and expected to be current an additional 30 days after that, they told me they will review and get back to me. 2 weeks later, they told me my only option is to accept for them to change my interest rate from 3.25 percent to 6.65 percent, while they add my remaining $9,000 to my capital. Effectively refinancing my entire low interest mortgage for an interest rate twice as high for the $9,000 arrear.
Why would I agree to more than double my 30 year fixed Mortgage Rate, for what is at this time $9,000 arrear, which i could makeup for in about 3 months; while I have an FHA loan, which qualifies me for lost mitigation, especially for cancer treatment?
Before they even sent me the letter, before I accept, (which I would never) they went on and modified my mortgage, changed my monthly payments from $1,800 $2,100 based on their proposed refinancing scheme. And they turned off my original payment option, leaving only the new proposed modification, while telling me in the letter I received much later, that by paying the $2,100 I accept the modification scheme. Still, I can't make regular payments. Lucky for me I had read the whole document, because deep into the several page mortgage modification proposal, only once, in the middle of a fine print, they said that the Mitigation plan rate will be 6.65; without explaining this is a refinance of my whole mortgage.
I am still not allowed to make payment on my original term, and when I tell the agent I decline the offer, she told me as soon as they remove the proposed lost mitigation plan, my house will go into foreclosure. Also, they erased all my payment history, the $4,000 payment I had made a week ago is not even shown. I am not too worried, because once i make another $5,000 payment, i will only be $4,000 i arrear, which I am ready to make, I don't think they can foreclose on 2 months arrear.
Anyways, I am posting because reddit postings have helped me avoid being victim a lot, I hope someone will read this and be aware, if they are in the same situation. The whole idea of forbearance is a scheme to entrap you. also, read the whole documents, because these people are just waiting to eat you alive.

Sucks and I’m sorry you are going through that.
Lesson for everyone else, if it’s not in writing it doesn’t exist. Regardless of what an agent says on the phone, get it in writing and read the fine print.
It depends on what you agreed to originally.
Did you agree to a reinstatement? Was it a short term repayment program? A forbearance isn’t a cookie cutter program.
Holy shit dude that’s absolutely insane – they literally trapped you into accepting a modification by blocking all other payment options? That sounds like straight up fraud to me. Have you contacted your state’s attorney general office or a housing counselor yet? This kind of predatory BS during cancer treatment should be illegal
