Was waiting out the SAVE forbearance as long as possible but got a notice that I had to do a new IDR in preparation for payments to resume in February. My old payment was $211. New one is $1087. I’m floored. I don’t know how I’m going to do this and I’m dreading telling my wife about this.

New IDR payment amount is going to kill my ability to have fun.

    1. Did you do your own math to check it?

What is your loan balance, income and family size? Do you file taxes jointly?

What payment plan does it say they’re putting you on? Either you have a very high current/recent income, or they’re putting you on a non IDR plan

If you’re in the SAVE forbearance, nothing has been confirmed as far as payments restarting. Any dates you’ve seen are placeholders only.

I don’t know about your payment amount once payments do restart, but you’ll need to provide more information (see the questions other users are asking) if you want people to be able to give useful advice.

    4. If you can afford it, you need to bring down your AGI as much as possible and file separately.
