This shift is linked to Musk's 2025 CEO Performance Award, which requires Tesla to reach 10 million active FSD subscriptions over the next decade. As of late 2025, only about 12% of the Tesla fleet had paid for FSD.

Currently, if one wishes to purchase FSD outright, it's $8000. Once the one-time purchase is removed, users must choose between the following subscription plans:

Monthly: $99 per month. Annual: $999 per year.

At $99 per month, it'll take approx. 7 years to match $8000 one-time purchase (assuming price remains $99 in the future)

I think, people should have seen this coming. Everything has become subscription based. Businesses don't do 1 time sale anymore, if they want to survive. They need recurring revenue.

Overall, this news will mean hit differently for 2 parties. Tesla shareholders and Tesla Owners.

For Tesla Shareholders, it sounds like a good decision, because it will provide Tesla with predictable subscription income.

But for the Tesla owners, particularly customers who prefer ownership over recurring payments, this looks like BAD news

Tesla's FSD (Full Self Driving) feature will be subscription-only from February 14

How many times is this post going to be here? Previous one was deleted so you made a new one?

Wait, so people who purchased it one time are being screwed and forced back to subscription?

    3. Since he is no longer concerned with selling cars FSD will be limited on what it can even run on, gotta sell cars first, so this is just a car company.

How would this make any sense? So removing 1 of 2 options is supposed to make it easier for him to hit that target? I don’t see the connection here other than he thinks FSD will be worth more in the future, and potentially wants to jack up the prices if he’s able to get the take rate of FSD up

Well he’s not gaining much in the way of new customers selling cars, so he has to figure out how to get more money from his legacy customers by selling subscriptions to them.

Most people who use FSD get monthly subscription anyway. Let’s hope price is reduced in future in lieu of competition, Musk’s target subscription numbers etc.

FSD is game changer for me. Go experience V14 on HW4 cars and you’ll see. I use it almost 90% of the time and the only time I drive manual is if I’m bored.

I thought Tesla was no longer a car company? Why do they need to sell FSD for cars they don’t need to sell?

    8. Subscription paywalling what would otherwise be their only selling point is certainly a choice

    9. So…they are removing an option that generates immediate cash flow in favor of something that reaches its break even in opportunity costs after 8 years, on a product that is selling less and less?

Okay-dokey. This won’t their profits look better for the next couple of years.
