I really need advice and I’m hoping someone here has experienced something similar.
I’m currently still in school, and I noticed something alarming on Credit Karma and my Equifax report. There are about 12 student loans listed in the same month (August) with different dollar amounts that I do not recognize.
Here’s where I’m confused and frustrated:
I did take out legitimate student loans during my school years I’m not denying that.
However, the loans showing on Equifax do NOT match what I see on MOHELA or on the FAFSA / StudentAid.gov website.
When I log into MOHELA, those specific loans are not there.
FAFSA also does not show these amounts or loans.
Because of this myy credit score dropped over 130 points, then again another 100 points just yesterday. This makes no sense to me because I’m still in school, and I shouldn’t even be required to make payments yet.
MOHELA keeps telling me to file a fraud claim, which I’m currently in the process of completing, but the damage to my credit keeps happening.
I’ve told MOHELA multiple times:
I recognize my real loans
I do NOT recognize these specific loans
They are not reflected in MOHELA or FAFSA, only on Equifax this is seriously stressing me out and affecting my ability to do anything credit-related.
Has anyone experienced student loans appearing on Equifax but NOT on MOHELA or FAFSA?
Is this possibly a servicer reporting error, identity theft, or something else?
Is there anything else I should be doing right now to stop my credit from dropping while the fraud claim is being reviewed?
Any guidance would really help. I’m exhausted and honestly angry that this is even possible while I’m still enrolled in school.

I would guess identity theft of some kind. It also sounds like they could be private loans which is why they don’t show up in FSA or Mohela (since I believe both are tied to your SSN and these other loans would be as well). If the loan is saying it’s through Mohela and not showing up on your account, then maybe it’s the case of someone with a similar name? I’m only assuming everything should be tied together with a ssn.
I would get ahold of equifax and freeze your credit. They might also be able to tell you what to do next
First of all Credit Karma is not a reliable source to view your credit store so don’t panic over that. I can’t say I understand what is happening and why loans are showing up but definitely get to the bottom of it. If
What is shown on your [studentaid.gov](http://studentaid.gov) account? How many loans and what dollar amount?
MOHELA services both federal and private loans. There are two MOHELA sites: [mohela.studentaid.gov](http://mohela.studentaid.gov) for federal and [mohela.com](http://mohela.com) for private.
Have you ever consolidated?
