The premise of the question is a little bit strange, but let me explain:

AI and especially AGI is expected by many to significantly reduce demand for white collar workers and lead to skyrocketing graduate unemployment (now the current state of graduate white collar unemployment probably has more to do with economic factors rather than AI substituting workers but we’ll assume that AI gets advanced enough to automate white collar jobs entirely)

People are expecting lower biglaw associate classes, lower big4 hiring and the end of the standard pyramid structure.

Now I think this probably isn’t that big of a deal if you are a citizen of a stable advanced economy with white collar roles. Automation usually leads to higher living standards, improved productivity and higher wages for most. So while maybe Lawyers and programmers might lose, carpenters and chefs probably wont. The problem is that I am not a citizen of a stable country AND my entry into blue collar roles is restricted by protectionist laws AND my country’s economy is based entirely on being the world’s back office with the rest being employed in unorganised informal roles or gig work (Neither is well paying, if you have to ask). While i can probably pick up carpentry or picking, it is not considered a specialty occupation by USCIS nor do you get points for an HVAC apprenticeship for Express Entry in Canada. Will the only way to legally migrate to advanced economies end due to AGI killing white collar employment? Or are AI CEOs, Andrew Yang and others prophesying doom based on poor economics?

There’s obviously the option of staying in India and picking up entrepreneurship a poorly paid trade. But id rather die than live here forever. I am currently 17 and will graduate law school (if i attend it) at 25-26. That is plenty of time for advanced AI to destroy BigLaw. MBAs usually require longer and higher quality work experience than JDs. So am i screwed?

Will A(G)I end skilled immigration pathways?
