This is something I have never understood is why a companies stock price drops harshly after an earnings report when they beat the expectations. Is there something I am missing? Because this seems like the stock should go up when they exceed expectations not down.

Why is AMD down when they beat earnings?

    1. Stock price is a future indicator, not just a performance metric. Ie, markets expect amd to perform poorly in the future, either through slow growth or lower guidance.

    2. What if a company beats earnings but spends double the amount of money on RnD?

What if they sold half of their properties and made billions?

You realise one number doesn’t mean good (enough) news, right?

    3. Whisper numbers had higher expectations. And the markets r3t&rded because Lisa said the inflection point is the MI450. MI450 doesn’t ramp till 4th quarter of 26

my guess – a) ram shortages is real b) intel is likely finally caught up and will be a viable option

From my limited experience, as long as everything is looking good and there doesn’t seem to be a reason for the fall, it can be a good buying opportunity.

People are weird and over-react to stuff. If there isn’t a good reason why they do it, it tends to bounce back eventually. I suppose it depends on how long you’re in it for?

    6. The price of AMD has almost nothing to do with their earnings for the last quarter. It is about whether they will capture massive profits from their new AI accelerators in the second half of the year and beyond.

Market rotation is moving away from riskier assets into places like energy.

This broadens the market by pushing money to other industries which is healthy I guess?

Give it 3 months and everyone in the media will be gassing the AI race again, providing just enough time for the big players to re-establish their positions at the new bottom.

My complete guess given zero financial education.

I used to ask the same question. The educated belief is that there is something in the earnings report that wasn’t promising goingforward. Might also be other metrics that are off. Could just be tech sell off.

Read earnings report. If you still have a high conviction, then you do you.

Look at what happened to MSFT. Hard to explain sometimes.

Because earnings a rear looking and the guidance is forward looking like the market is.

    10. It’s not about the past, it’s about the future.

“Sell the news” reactions are very common after earnings announcements, even if the news is positive. This is especially true in a jittery market like we’re in now.

I’ll ask them. This is not acceptable. Hang on I’ll be back with concrete answers.

    12. I don’t think it’s AMD it’s a general sell off of tech, software, AI, and semiconductors stocks in general. Either a temp correction or a longer term bursting of the AI bubble (it’s too early to know which). Stocks often need to go down before they go up.

    13. They guided down… Its in the earnings calls. You should listen to it if you plan on owning the stock…

    14. Maybe the better question is what does it mean to beat earnings. Whose earnings expectations are you comparing it to, “analysts”

    15. Imagine you’re in the reverse situation. You want to cut bait on a stock that you’ve lost money on. Maybe you’ll wait until after earnings to see if it goes up alittle and break even or lose less. Some long holders might have been at the point where they’re ready to sell at a profit but wait until earnings to see if it’ll go up alittle bit before they take profits.

    16. the whole semiconductor is down massively.  maybe its just people doing short term trade, and memory price spiked, so possible demand shrink because memory is too expensive.
