I'm in my Junior year. I graduated with an A.S. last spring, and I transferred for the Fall 2025 semester into the BA program. I've since really enjoyed the Econ courses that I've been taking. I've spent a lot of time looking at course requirements for all of the Econ degrees (My Uni offers 3), and I make my schedule myself. I discussed this subject with my advisor, and she said it's possible, so I'm considering switching programs. I am planning May 2027 graduation with both options.

With the way that the degree requirements line up in the BA program, I currently need 22 more credits to reach 120, however, I need 25 more liberal arts credits. This ends up being 27 however, or 9 courses total. The BA path only requires me to take 4 more Econ courses (Econ Stats + 3 300lvl Electives), so I'd then need 5 other liberal arts courses (of which can include Econ).

With the Quantitative Econ BS, my liberal arts credits are already fulfilled, and I only need 22 more credits to graduate. I would need to take Calc 2 (4credit), (I did well in Calc 1, but I would need to review a bit), Econometrics, Econ Stats + 2 (400lvl) Electives, and maybe one extra course to stay above full time. If Econ Stats, Calc 2 and a 400elective is doable + upper lvl elective, I could make it work.

I initially took the BA program because I wasn't sure how hard the Econ courses would be, and for the most part, they have been enjoyable and I haven't had much problem with them. I took Intermediate Micro and International Econ last semester, and it went well. I'm taking Intermediate Macro, Industrial Organization, and Banking Econ this semester and they seem to be interesting.

I'm also taking an ancient history course, which has required quite a bit of reading and will require me to write a 10 page paper. I don't mind doing it, but I would almost just rather do math instead of taking a bunch of liberal arts electives and doing a lot of writing.

Would I have better luck with employment with a Quant Econ BS, vs an Econ BA? I'm starting to become a bit concerned with the rise of AI. Ideally, I would get a state job. I'm starting to gain a bit of an interest for public policy, so I am also considering graduate school too. The Quant degree is a feeder into the MA program. I don't want to "box" myself in, so I want to keep doors open. What are your thoughts? Thank you.

Should I pivot from Econ BA to Quant Econ BS?

BA is for people who think they want to be a lawyer or get master in public administration.

BS is for people who think they want to do economics or business. As an economist the valuable courses to most employers are precisely “Calc 2 …. , Econometrics, Econ Stats” and upper levels that are related to your final industry if you can get them.
