I'm a mentor to a wonderful teen who just turned 18. She doesn't have family support and has been driving her moms car without a license or car insurance. She's a teen parent and is on track to attend college in the fall. She'll be a first gen college student. I'm her friend and casual mentor but don't have the money to be of much support.
As I see it the car is the easy part, I can help find her something safe and affordable.
Insurance feels trickier – I'm nervous to add her to my plan for the added cost and risk to my finances and policy if she gets in an accident. She can't afford her own plan and her parents are uninsured.
Any advice?

I would help her get her license first because she’ll need that for her insurance, then when she does get a car, it will be cheaper to insure an older car that doesn’t need comp/coll. Either way, it’s going to be expensive. I wouldn’t recommend putting her on your policy at all.
If she doesn’t have a license or insurance she needs to stop driving immediately. It’s not fun but a lot of mom’s take the bus stroller and all. If she gets into an accident or even gets pulled over she can potentially ruin her own life and never financially recover.
Get rid of the car, help her get a bus pass and what you can do to help her is help her get her license.
You can’t even put her on insurance if she doesn’t have a license. She cannot legally drive. If nothing has happened yet count it as a blessing and DO NOT LET HER DRIVE until she has her license. You can help her learn, study and support her during the test or offer to babysit so she can do this.
Yeah, unfortunately she is in a tough position. You should not add her to your policy. If anything happens, you would be on the hook. She needs to get her own insurance. It sounds like she’s trying to get her life on track, but if she gets into an at-fault accident while uninsured, she may never be able to recover financially. The other party could garnish her wages and go after any assets/money she might have.
Shop around for some quotes. It’s going to be expensive since she’s young, has already been driving uninsured, and probably doesn’t have great credit. Geico or Progressive would be a good start.
Edit: She needs to get her license first.
