I've been moving between countries for about six months now and somewhere around month two I started leaning heavily on crypto for day to day expenses. At this point it covers probably 80% of my spending. I wanted to write up an honest account of what the experience has actually been like because most of what I read before I started was either overly optimistic or completely dismissive.

What works well: contactless payments have been flawless everywhere I've been, Southeast Asia, parts of Europe, a few stops in South America. If a terminal accepts tap to pay it works. Adding it to google pay meant I wasn't carrying a separate card, which when you're moving around a lot and trying to minimize what's in your pockets genuinely matters. The conversion from crypto to local currency happens invisibly, the merchant sees a normal transaction, I see a deduction from my balance. No drama.

The privacy aspect has been more valuable than I expected while traveling. Having my spending not be directly traceable back to my full financial profile feels meaningful when you're in unfamiliar places and don't fully know what data exposure looks like locally.

What doesn't work as well: ATMs are hit or miss. I'd say about 1 in 3 attempts at cash machines has failed for one reason or another, either the machine doesn't support the network or there's a technical hiccup. I keep a small traditional bank account as a backup specifically for cash situations. Some merchants who only take local cards or cash are obviously a dead end. And if your crypto balance drops because of a market move and you haven't loaded up recently you need to be paying attention.

Overall it's genuinely viable as a primary spending method if you're organized and keep a backup. The technology is at a point where it's not a workaround anymore, it's just a card that works. Would be happy to answer questions if anyone's thinking about making the switch.
