Saw the new Working Americans Tax Cut Act" proposal and wanted to get your take.
The basics:
Under $46,000 income? $0 Federal Income Tax.
Married? Limit is $92,000.
How? Funded by a 5% surtax on millionaires.
It’s meant to cover the cost of living so people aren't taxed on survival money. Obviously, you’d still pay state tax and Social Security, but this would still be a huge boost to the monthly paycheck.
Do you think this has a real chance of passing, or is it just political talk?

This will never pass a Republican held senate and house
Doesn’t this income level basically pay no federal tax already?
No chance it’ll pass. It would definitely help single people and those without children, no doubt. it would do a little for families with multiple children, but virtually nothing for people with 3+ children, especially single parents at this income level since they pay little tax if any already.
I dont dislike it in principal and I’m sure they know it’ll never pass, so theyll get MAGA on record voting against tax breaks for the poor and middleclass…but could that moeny be used better? Add the millionaire tax alone and provide healthcare for people. This has even less of a chance than the tax cut which I’m sure theyre aware.
There is no good reason to tax income under $50,000 annual. Not really one for taxing incomes under $100,000. Taxing income in general is kind of shit economic policy. The original argument was that it would be progressive, because it could target high earners; but in practice its value is in hiding wealth from tax enforcement, hence poor people paying relatively more of their income in taxes and the rich paying very little of their wealth in taxes.
2018-2024 $44,725 single filers were taxed at an effective tax rate of 9-10%. It’s a welcome tax cut for people who don’t make enough to rent a single room apartment anywhere in the greater NYC area.
We’re 2-3 years away from having tens of millions of unemployable laid off white collar workers.
Gonna need something far more drastic than this to hold off the inevitable riots.
Problem is, all of our politicians are 80 years old greedy, and power hungry. All bought and paid for by big corps.
Not a single one takes their public servant duty seriously.
The concept is politically appealing but the math is challenging because roughly 40% of Americans already pay zero federal income tax, so this expands that significantly and narrows the tax base further at a time when the deficit is already unsustainable. It has almost zero chance of passing
Restoring the (inflation adjusted) tax brackets we had in 1980 would do virtually the same thing. The bottom rate in the tax tables way back then was zero percent, and that would apply to an AGI of $15,000, with the standard deduction of $15,000(inflated 1980) and significantly lower rates for lower incomes, we’d get a similar result.
Putting this out there now is just political theater.
